Newstead Abbey History - Part 1 (BSL & subtitles)

A short video that shows a beautiful landscape, alongside the river and the ancient road, at the heart of Sherwood Forest. Here, King Henry II creates a religious house, for canons to live, work and pray.

A magnificent church is built, dedicated to St Mary. This community lives in peace together at Newstead Priory.

King Henry VIII brings an end to the religious community, and grants Newstead to Sir John Byron. Sir John renames the house Newstead Abbey.
